Open Letter in the L-Camera-Forum to Leica Camera AG
To whom it may concern
Those who have elected to buy a Leica M9, M Monochrom or M-E camera body have deliberately decided in
favour of a range finder camera, not to say the Essential. Those who elected to buy an M-E or an M
Monochrom after the introduction of the M (Typ 240) have deliberately chosen a camera without Live View
and without video function, not to say the Essential.
Now they must realize that they may have taken a wrong decision, for the camera has a sensor whose cover
glass may show signs of corrosion after a comparatively short time. Leica does indeed offer to replace any
affected sensors even for out of warranty cameras, the price being dependent on the age of the camera.
However, the replacement will exhibit the very same problem the defective one has had in the first place.
Owners of the Monochrom are affected even more severely; there appear to be no replacement sensors of
this type.
Leica also offers an upgrade path to an M (Typ 240) for owners of cameras affected with the sensor
corrosion, but only at a cost. The upgrade even results in a profit for Leica, as the costly repair does not have
to be performed. It results in a net loss for the customer, as repairing and selling the camera with the
defective sensor and buying a new M (Typ 240) may turn out to be cheaper than the upgrade offered by
Leica Camera AG.
The owners of M9, M Monochrom and M-E camera bodies expect Leica Camera AG to clearly state the
source of the problem.
The owners of those cameras also expect Leica Camera AG to offer a fair price and a reasonably fast
delivery on the exchange of any defective sensor, i.e. a turnaround of not more than one week. Should this
not be possible or should the owner prefer, we expect Leica Camera AG to offer an upgrade to a model
which does not have the problem at a mutually agreeable rate.
We expect Leica Camera AG to clearly communicate whether it is deemed possible to modify the sensor of
those cameras in such a manner that it will not corrode while maintaining the existing image quality.
We expect a binding statement from Leica Camera AG on whether there will be successor models no later
than 2016 for the affected models, particularly for the "budget" M-E and the unique M Monochrom. It would
also be interesting to know whether those successors might be based on the M9 or on the M (Typ 240).
We also expect a binding statement by Leica Camera AG about what customers are to expect whose
replaced sensors fail again.
The continued development and support of dependable, technically advanced and demanding cameras is for
us, the users and owners, just as important as it is for Leica Camera AG. For the very reason that we chose
to use the M9, the M Monochrom and the M-E for their literally unique properties, we desperately wish Leica
Camera AG to be successful in their market and in particular to successfully manage the current sensor
issue.
We gravely fear that the measures taken so far and the communication with the interested public and above
all the owners don't appear to be adequate so far and don't seem to be in concordance with Leica's quest for
the Essential.
